Function of Four tones The Key to sounding good in Chinese is to get the four tones right.
Chinese is a tonal language; there are four tones in Mandarin Chinese: even tone (1)Rising tone (2), low-dip tone (3), and falling tone (4). They are commonly referred to as: First tone (even tone), second tone (rising tone), third tone (low-dip tone), fourth tone (falling tone). In this beginning text, we will use 1,2, 3 and 4 to represent the four tones.
The following give you four meaning of the word
‘ma’媽 ma1 (mother), 麻ma2 (numb), 馬ma3 (horse), 罵ma4 (to scold)

Look at the form of 是. You will notice that the form of the verb does not change no matter if it refers to a present time, a past time, or a future time, nor does it change whether the subject is third person singular of first person.
